Code of Conduct

All Councillors commit to treat others with respect.
The Seven Principles of Public Life (also known as the Nolan Principles) apply to anyone who works as a public office-holder. This includes all those who are elected or appointed to public office, nationally and locally and we each sign up to this undertaking

Introduction:  The 'Nolan Principles' code of practice has been written with regard to the seven principles of public life identified by the Nolan Committee in their First Report on Standards in Public Life in May 1995 and subsequently endorsed by the Government.

Selflessness:   Holders of public office should take decisions solely in terms of the public interest. They should not do so in order to gain financial or other material benefits for themselves, their family, or their friends.

Integrity:  Holders of public office should not place themselves under any financial or other obligation to an outside individual or organisation that might influence them in the performance of their official duties.

Objectivity:  In carrying out public business, including making public appointments, awarding contracts, or recommending individuals for rewards and benefits, holders of public office should make choices on merits.

Accountability:  Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to their office.

Openness:  Holders of public office should be as open as possible about all the decisions and actions they take. They should give reasons for their decisions and restrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands.

Honesty:  Holders of public office have a duty to declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.

Leadership:  Holders of public office should promote and support these principles by leadership and example.

Throughout my career in education, health and social care, I have always worked respectfully with others from all backgrounds and beliefs in accordance with the Nolan Principles and I consider the Code of Conduct is a duty and privilege to follow in all walks of life.

I have found from experience that putting ideologies aside, listening to one another and staying focused on what is to be achieved, is the best way to produce long term improvements.  If we can find a way to work together then we can bring about the positive changes that will build a brighter future.
